Orick

“Get Away From The Ordinary in Orick.”

A Teeny Tiny Town on The Edge of a Gigantic Redwood Forest.

With a population of only about 400, this small town offers visitors a break from the ordinary, and a first-hand glimpse into why it is is a favorite for many. The natural history of the area started from Gold Rush pioneers and settlers who made this their home. The 25 year migration left with many stories and important facts and thus the name, The Jewel of the West!

In The Redwood Empire.

The quaint and serene town sits in the middle of the beautiful Redwood Forest and is a destination for many naturalists, environmentalists, and outdoor-lovers from around the world. The trails and camping opportunities are many and there is always room – space is never “”sold out”” under the stars and canopy of trees.

A Unique City

Orick is a town of of creative characters. Burl art has become abundant over the years and you can find many unique carved pieces along the roadside, or have one carved by one of the many local artists. Additionally, the Annual Orick Rodeo brings with it a host of fun events (some even for children) and includes a “”chicken run”” with a BBQ on the beach.

Dining and Accommodations

Dining opportunities are here, but options are very limited. Many people continue on south to the town of Trinidad, which has a larger selection of eateries ranging from simple to fancy. Hotels and motels are also few, but there are some worth mentioning – see our recommendations.

A little “scary” looking from the outside, but it’s a mostly all-in-fun Biker bar with a twist. They bill themselves as “the only watering hole for 40 miles in either direction” and feature plenty of “biker chic” (Harley Davidson) decor. But they also have generous portions of great American food and even great salads too! There is also a huge beer selection at reasonable prices. The owner spends summers in Orick (running Hawg Wild) and in Winter runs a place in Mexico – so it’s open only seasonally. This place is an intriguing mix of “biker hangout and four-star food stop. Most people know Redwood as home to the tallest trees on Earth. But the parks also protect vast prairies, oak woodlands, wild riverways, and nearly 40 miles of pristine coastline, all supporting a rich mosaic of wildlife diversity and cultural traditions. Together, the National Park Service and California State Parks manage these lands for the inspiration, enjoyment, and education of all people.

This is one of the most popular trails in Redwood National Park. The staff at Kuchel Visitor Center often recommend it to visitors since it’s short, level, and close to the visitor center. Unusually for a major redwood attraction, this trail is in a redwood upland environment at 1200 feet above sea level. Because of its elevation, the grove is often in the clouds and gets a lot more fog than the lowland groves. There’s a lush ground-cover of ferns, but the understory is open and the trail’s position high on a hillside affords some nice views of the forest. Rhododendrons are common and bloom in early June.

If you’ve never walked between fifty foot walls of ferns, than you haven’t experienced a hike like Fern Canyon Trail. This short trek transports you through a cool moist canyon with fortress-like walls covered top to bottom in enchanting ferns. The trail starts just inland from a vacant stretch of Northern California coast, and then turns inland into the lush shady forest housing Fern Canyon. The hike can be done as a 1.1-mile lollipop loop with 150 feet of elevation gain, but it is most enjoyable as a one mile out and back with 75 feet of elevation gain. Turn around at the top of Fern Canyon and replay the most exciting portion of the hike.
