“A Place to Relax by the Sea, and Then Some.”
A Charming and Sleepy little Town that Harbors a Serious Golf Mecca
Tucked between Seaside and Warrenton, Gearhart is one of the oldest beach communities on the Oregon Coast. Its streets are lined with beautiful old homes, with a mix of permanent and summer residents. There are boutiques on its main street where you can buy artwork, postcards and small gifts, and a number of regionally renowned restaurants call Gearhart home, but it remains largely uncommercialized. However, the real hidden treasure here is for golfers.
The Oldest Golf Course West of the Mississippi…
The Gearhart Golf Links course, which opened in 1892 as three holes strewn across the sand dunes, is the oldest course in the northwest and arguably in the Western United States. Today the golf course is 6,300 yards from the Back Tees, 5922 from the Middle Tees, and 5154 yards from the Forward Tees. If you’re a true golf enthusiast/historian, you’ll simply love the flavor. Annual memberships are available, but you don’t have to be a member to play golf here! There is also the McMenamins “”Sandtrap”” Pub and a Pro Shop on the premises.
As for Beaches…
Several “”ideal”” beaches are close by for those looking for clean sand, beach play, picnicking, and great kite flying conditions. The sunsets can be spectacular too – so bring your camera. The Gearhart Beach entrance allows vehicle access to the beach. You can drive as far North as Warrenton, and as far south as the Pacific Way beach.
Dining and Accommodations
There are dining establishments for most tastes and budgets in Gearhart as well as a number of hotels and motels (both national chain and excellent independently operated) to choose from. But a hands-down favorite is the Gearhart by the Sea Resort for its close proximity to Gearhart Golf Links.
