“A Place to Relax, Renew and Step Back in Time.”
The Oldest U.S. Settlement West Of the Rockies.
Situated on a small peninsula near the mouth of the great Columbia River, surrounded by the lush green vegetation of a northern temperate rain-forest, Astoria (named for fur-trading magnate, and America’s first millionaire, John Jacob Astor) is full of the visual echoes of bygone times. From, the great bridge that carries the 101 HWY over the mighty Columbia to the hundreds of handsomely restored Victorian-era homes and vintage downtown buildings at every turn, Astoria presents the visitor with a view into other times.
Speaking of views…
The Astoria Column is a tower atop Coxcomb Hill and part of a 30-acre city park. The 125-foot (38m)-tall column has a 164-step spiral staircase ascending to an observation deck at the top providing the viewer with a spectacular panorama of the Columbia River mouth and environs.
Astoria’s Quiet Vintage Charm Set in a Mild and Moist Climate.
With, on average, nearly 200 days of precipitation a year, Astoria and the surrounding area are best suited for indoor pursuits, like snuggling by the fire, visiting a museum. Or, perhaps, to simply take a relaxing stroll along the riverside warf area (or ride the Astoria Riverfront Trolley), and peruse the many Art galleries, quaint boutiques and inviting bistros down town. Dress warmly however. Though the sun does shine there, and quite often, it definitely is not a place to go if you specifically expect to work on your tan. It’s a great place for a romantic escape however.
Dining and Accommodations
Though many of the national restaurant and hotel/motel chains are represented locally, there are also many charming and picturesque restaurants, cafes, bistros to dine at and several bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) along with other independent places to stay to accommodate most budgets.
Situated on a peninsula near the mouth of the great Columbia River, surrounded by the lush vegetation of a northern temperate rain-forest, Astoria (named for fur-trading magnate, and America’s first millionaire, John Jacob Astor) is full of the visual echoes of bygone times.
