“Oregon’s String of Pearls”
The entity known as Lincoln City today was created in 1965 from a half dozen smaller communities: Taft, Nelscott, Cutler City, Delake, Oceanlake, and Wecoma Beach. These were all tiny adjacent communities along U.S. Route 101, which serves now as Lincoln City’s main street. The name “”Lincoln City”” was chosen from contest entries submitted by local school children. The contest was held when it was determined that using any one of the five communities’ names would be too controversial. The result is one long thin colorful and quirky town with seven miles of beachfront. Lincoln City has two primary economic resources: retirement and tourism. The later has greatly increased since 1995 when the Confederated Tribes of Siletz opened Chinook Winds Casino at the northern end of the city on property overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Kites!!!
In Lincoln City, you’ll usually find the beaches filled with colorful kites, taking advantage of the winds in this city on the 45th Parallel. People take kite-flying very seriously here. Lincoln City was named Kite Capital of the World by “Kitelines” Magazine, and each year, they hold not one, but two kite festivals that bring enthusiast and competitors from all over. Every weekend from July to October, kite experts will bring giant show pieces to the D River Wayside. Some of these flying wonders are as large as 90 feet long! Bring your camera. Cuisine…
Not to be outdone by the other Arts, the city is also home to a Culinary Center where, under the guidance of Chef Sharon Wiest, classes offer a wide array of subjects and cuisines. In a demonstration class it’s your job to sit back, relax, and enjoy the wonderful food and wine while you learn from a pro. Or dive right into one of our hands-on classes, from pasta-making to fish cookery, dim sum, tamales, pizza, sushi, and even pickling and canning our Oregon harvest in the summer and fall. The Culinary Center is home to four cook-offs a year: Jambalaya, Fish Taco, Wild Mushroom, and Chowder, all featuring Pacific Northwest ingredients. These free, festival-like events are a great way to try out some of our great coastal restaurants.
Dining and Accommodations…
Perhaps because of the presence of the casino, and in the aggregate, Lincoln City is a little larger than some other nearby beach towns, there are more than a few national chain motels and fast-food eateries are represented here. If that’s your pleasure (or budget) we won’t stop you. But give any of the following independent establishments a try. It is hard to imagine anyone being disappointed. As for great food…really, really great food…perhaps it’s the presence and influence of the Culinary Center that some of the best chefs are working here – and the best meals available anywhere on the coast too. See our recommendations.
The Casino…
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the 157,000 square foot Chinook Winds Casino Resort is Oregon’s premier Casino, with over 1200 slot machines, table games, live poker, keno and bingo, available 24 hours a day! Owned and operated by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, the spirit of the Tribe is captured in the decor of the facility. The convention center has 37,000 square feet of meeting space. The “”Concerts by the Sea”” showroom seats more than 1,200 people and features monthly headline acts.
An Outstanding Destination for Culture…Cuisine…Kites…and Casino Nightlife!
Every community up and down the north coast has an art or craft gallery or two. The shoreline environment is so compelling and beautiful, how could it not attract a few artistic and creative types. But you will find an abundance of riches in Lincoln City with seemingly dozens of artists calling the area home, with studios, galleries, glass-blowing shops as well as The Lincoln City Cultural Center which offer shows, displays and a wide variety of classes and performance events year-round.
